Wedding Photography Coverage: How Do You Know Which One You Need?

One of the most common questions couples ask when choosing a wedding photography package is, “How many hours of coverage do we actually need?”

The answer depends entirely on your wedding day plans, priorities, and timeline! Every wedding is unique, and while some couples can fit everything into 6 hours, others need 8 or even 10 hours to fully tell the story of their day.

Here's a breakdown to help you decide!

6 Hours of Coverage May Be Perfect If...

A 6 hour package is ideal for couples planning a smaller, more streamlined wedding day.

Six hours is often enough when:

  • Your ceremony and reception are at the same venue.

  • You have a smaller guest count.

  • You're not planning extensive getting-ready coverage.

  • You don't need coverage through the end of the reception.

  • Family photos and portraits can be completed efficiently.

  • You're having an intimate wedding, micro wedding, or elopement.

While 6 hours can absolutely be enough for some weddings, I'll be honest, it's not my favorite timeline to work with!!!!!

In my experience, 6 hour wedding days often leave very little room for flexibility!!! If hair and makeup run behind, family photos take longer than expected, or the timeline experiences even minor delays (which is completely normal on a wedding day), things can start to feel rushed!

I never want my couples to feel like they're racing from one part of the day to the next or worrying about whether we'll have enough time for the photos they envisioned! Some of my favorite images happen when there's room to breathe!!! A few extra minutes for portraits, a quiet moment together after the ceremony, or stepping away for sunset photos without feeling pressured.

For couples planning a simpler wedding day with everything in one location, 6 hours can work beautifully. But if you're on the fence between 6 and 8 hours, I typically recommend 8 hours whenever possible. The additional time often creates a more relaxed experience and allows us to tell your wedding story more completely!!

8 Hours of Coverage May Be Perfect If...

Eight hours is often the sweet spot for many traditional weddings!

Eight hours is a great fit when:

  • You want some getting-ready coverage.

  • You're planning a first look or dedicated portrait time.

  • Your ceremony and reception are at the same location or nearby.

  • You want coverage through most major reception events.

  • You'd like a little extra flexibility in your timeline.

Many couples find that 8 hours comfortably covers the majority of their wedding day without feeling rushed.

10 Hours of Coverage May Be Best If...

Ten hours is ideal for couples who want their entire wedding story documented from start to finish.

Ten hours is often the better fit when:

  • You want detailed getting-ready coverage.

  • Both partners are getting ready at separate locations.

  • You have a large wedding party.

  • Your ceremony and reception are at different venues.

  • There is significant travel time involved.

  • You want sunset portraits later in the day.

  • You're planning a sparkler exit, private last dance, or grand exit.

  • You want plenty of reception coverage and candid guest moments.

The extra time allows the day to unfold naturally and provides flexibility if the timeline runs behind.

Which Option Is Right for You?

Ask yourself these questions:

Getting Ready

  • Do I want photos of hair, makeup, details, and candid moments?

  • Do I want coverage of both partners getting ready?

Portraits

  • Are we doing a first look?

  • Do we want sunset portraits?

  • Do we have multiple portrait locations?

Logistics

  • Are our ceremony and reception at different venues?

  • Is travel time involved?

Reception

  • Do we want coverage through the grand exit?

  • Am I okay with a fake exit?

  • Do we want lots of dancing and candid guest photos?

Our Advice as a Wedding Photographer

If you're planning a smaller wedding with fewer moving parts, 6 hours may be all you need.

If you want a well rounded collection of images that tells most of the story of your day, 8 hours is often the perfect middle ground!

If you want every chapter of your wedding day documented, from getting ready to your grand exit, 10 hours provides the most flexibility and peace of mind.

The best package isn't necessarily the one with the most hours. It's the one that allows you to enjoy your wedding day while ensuring the moments that matter most are beautifully preserved!!!!!
